The Department of Transportation PROTECT Discretionary Grant Program awarded grant funding to 80 recipients nationwide to fund projects that address the climate crisis by improving the resilience of the surface transportation system. The awards are located across 37 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands and include seven Tribal projects.

Carlson and Associates assisted the Tribe in developing the scope, budget, researched and prepared the Benefit-Cost-Analysis (BCA) for road improvements to address critical transportation safety deficiencies on the sole access route to a section of the Reservation. The funds will be used for engineering design, environmental design, and construction for road improvements. The project will create a secondary evacuation route for the safe passage of Tribal members and emergency response staff in the event of an emergency, such as a wildfire.

As part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, the PROTECT Grant Program funded projects that will strengthen the country’s surface transportation system against extreme weather events, including roads, bridges, highways, public transportation, pedestrian facilities, ports, and intercity passenger rail. By increasing the resilience of these assets, these investments will reduce short- and long-term costs by minimizing future needs for maintenance and reconstruction.
